Wrong Number, Right Guy · Chapter 9

The Break Room Confrontation

The fluorescent lights of the break room hummed softly as Maya and Alex pushed the door open. A low murmur of coworkers chatted over coffee, the scent of fresh pastries drifting from the display case. The room was a splash of color—bright mugs, a green plant in the corner, a chalkboard with the day’s specials written in cheerful cursive. Maya slipped the folded note from her pocket into her palm, feeling its crinkled edges against her thumb.

"Looks like they really wanted us here," Alex said, his voice low enough to blend with the background chatter. He glanced at the note, then at Maya, his eyes warm and a little amused.

"Yeah," Maya replied, her smile a mix of nerves and excitement. "I just hope whoever left it knows what they're doing."

They stepped toward the coffee machine, where a small stack of napkins lay on the counter. A sticky note was tucked underneath one of them, its paper slightly torn at the edge. Alex reached out and pulled it free, unfolding it with a careful flick of his wrist.

The message was handwritten in a hurried script: "I'm the one who sent the texts. Meet me by the pantry shelf at 3:05. – S"

Maya raised an eyebrow. "S? Who could that be?"

Before Alex could answer, a voice behind the pantry shelf interrupted them. "Hey, you two look like you're on a secret mission," the voice said, bright and slightly nervous. A young woman stepped forward, holding a reusable water bottle. She wore a company badge that read "Sam Patel – Intern." Her hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail, and she smiled shyly.

"Sam?" Alex asked, surprised. "What are you doing here?"

Sam shifted her weight from one foot to the other, glancing at the note in Alex's hand. "I—uh—left that note. I thought it would be a fun way to get people to talk about the new project. I didn't expect it to turn into a... mystery."

Maya's eyes widened. "You sent the warning texts too?"

Sam swallowed, her cheeks flushing a soft pink. "Yeah, I did. I heard about the contract issue from Priya. I was worried the team would miss something important, so I started texting the number I thought was mine. I didn't realize it would end up on a stranger's phone."

Alex let out a low chuckle that made Maya's heart lift. "Well, you certainly got our attention."

"I didn't mean to cause trouble," Sam said, fidgeting with the cap on her bottle. "I just wanted to help. I thought if I made it a little game, people would pay more attention. I guess I got more than I bargained for."

The break room's chatter softened as a few coworkers glanced over, curious about the sudden exchange. Maya glanced at the clock on the wall—3:07 PM. The minute hand ticked forward, confirming the timing.

"So what now?" Maya asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

Sam hesitated, then glanced toward the pantry shelf where a row of cleaning supplies rested. She pulled a small cardboard box from behind the shelf and set it on the counter. Inside, a slim USB drive lay on a piece of paper with a doodle of a smiley face.

"I saved the emails and the screenshots of the texts on this," Sam explained. "I thought maybe the IT team could trace the number from there, but I didn't want to involve them without proof. I wanted someone I trusted to look at it first."

Alex picked up the USB drive, his fingers brushing Sam's briefly. A faint spark of electricity seemed to pass between them, making Maya smile despite the absurdity of the moment.

"Thanks, Sam," Alex said, his tone sincere. "We'll make sure this gets to the right people."

Sam's smile widened. "And… if you ever need a coffee break buddy, I'm around."

Maya laughed, the sound light and genuine. "We'll keep that in mind."

Just then, Maya's phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen, and a new text popped up: "Good work. Meet me at the rooftop at 4:00. – ?"

She stared at the message, the words blinking on the screen. The break room seemed to shrink around her as the implication sank in. The rooftop was rarely used, and a meeting there sounded both daring and oddly romantic.

Alex caught the look on Maya's face and raised an eyebrow. "Another clue?"

Maya nodded, the excitement in her chest mixing with a flutter of nerves. "Looks like the mystery isn’t over yet."

Sam watched the two of them, her eyes bright. "Well, I guess I’ve done my part. Good luck, you two."

As Sam turned to leave, the door behind her swung open again, this time revealing Darren Cole, Maya's boss, holding a stack of folders. He paused, noticing the USB drive on the counter.

"What’s all this?" Darren asked, his voice a mix of curiosity and concern.

Alex stepped forward, holding the drive out. "We found the source of the texts. Sam here helped us collect the evidence. We were just about to head up to the rooftop for the next lead."

Darren glanced at the note in Alex’s hand, then at Maya’s phone. He sighed, his shoulders relaxing a fraction. "Looks like I’ve been outmaneuvered by interns and mystery texts. Fine, just make sure we keep this professional. No more surprises, okay?"

Maya smiled at Darren, grateful for his reluctant approval. "We’ll keep it professional," she promised, though a part of her felt a thrill at the thought of a rooftop meeting.

Alex tucked the USB drive back into his pocket, slipped his hand into Maya’s, and gave her a quick, reassuring squeeze. "Ready?"

Maya glanced at the clock again—3:12 PM. The elevator doors at the end of the hallway began to open with a soft ding. The group exchanged quick, amused glances as they prepared to leave the break room, the mystery still unfolding.

As they stepped out, Maya’s phone buzzed one more time. This message was different—no question mark, just a single line: "Don’t look up. – ?"

She stared at the screen, the words flashing like a warning. The hallway lights flickered for a split second, casting a brief shadow over the elevator panel. Maya felt a sudden rush of adrenaline, her heart beating faster as she wondered what the next step would bring.

The elevator doors closed with a soft whoosh, sealing the group inside. The ascent began, the numbers on the floor indicator climbing toward the twentieth floor, where the building’s rooftop garden awaited.

Maya looked at Alex, his profile calm against the mirrored wall. "Whatever’s waiting up there, we’ll face it together," she whispered.

Alex turned, meeting her gaze, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Together," he echoed.

The elevator paused at the twentieth floor, the doors sliding open to reveal a small, wind‑tossed garden of potted plants and a single bench under a pergola. The city skyline stretched out behind them, the sun beginning its late‑afternoon dip.

A shadow moved near the edge of the garden, and a voice called out, "Hey, you made it!"

Maya’s breath caught as she stepped forward, the mystery still humming around them like a soft, mischievous tune.
