Wrong Number, Right Guy · Chapter 10

The Voice in the Garden

Maya stepped off the elevator onto the rooftop garden and felt the wind tug at her hair. The sky was a soft blue, the sun slipping toward the horizon. A row of potted succulents lined the edge of the pergola, and a single bench sat under a lattice of climbing vines. Alex stood beside her, his hand still warm where it had squeezed hers. Darren lingered a few steps behind, his briefcase still open on the concrete, the folders inside rustling with each gust.

"Hey, you made it!" a voice called from near the far edge of the garden, where a tall metal pipe held a decorative lantern. Maya's heart thumped louder than the hum of the city below.

Both Alex and Darren turned at once. A woman in a bright yellow jacket stepped forward, her smile wide enough to light the whole rooftop. She held a reusable water bottle in one hand and a small stack of printed flyers in the other. Her badge read "Priya Patel – Senior Analyst."

"Priya!" Alex exclaimed, the surprise clear in his voice. "What are you doing up here?"

Priya laughed, the sound bright against the faint rustle of leaves. "I could ask you the same thing. I saw the note on the break‑room board and thought, why not make this a little game?" She waved a flyer. "The "S" in the note stood for "Surprise." I wanted to see if anyone would actually follow it."

Maya blinked, trying to keep the swirl of thoughts in order. The mysterious texts, the note, the USB—everything had seemed like a random prank, but now the pieces clicked into a single picture. "So you were the one who sent the texts?" Maya asked, her voice softer than she intended.

Priya nodded, her eyes flicking to the USB drive still in Alex's pocket. "I saw the contract issue coming and figured the team needed a wake‑up call. Sam helped me collect the evidence, and I thought a little treasure hunt would get everyone's attention without the usual boring meetings. I didn't expect it to turn into... this."

"This," Alex said, gesturing to the rooftop, "feels like a romance novel."

Priya grinned. "Well, I did notice you two exchanging jokes over text. Thought maybe you'd appreciate a little drama before the big client presentation tomorrow."

Maya glanced at Alex, noticing how his eyes softened when he looked at her. She felt a warm rush that had nothing to do with the wind. "I have to admit, it was fun," she said, surprising herself with the honesty. "But I also felt a little... uneasy. I didn't know who was watching us.

"That's fair," Priya said, tapping the flyers. "I wanted it to be a secret, but I didn't think it would get this intense. The last flyer says, 'Don't look up.' I thought it would make you think about the bigger picture, not that you'd actually look up at the sky."

Before Maya could answer, Darren cleared his throat. "If this is a game, what's the end goal? We have a client presentation in the morning. I need the team focused, not chasing clues.

Priya's smile faded a fraction. "The goal was to get the contract details on the table before the legal team pushes the changes. The USB has the email chain that proves the client is trying to cut our fees. If we bring that up tomorrow, we have leverage."

Alex took a step forward, his hand still lightly brushing Maya's arm. "So you set this up to help us win the contract? That's... actually pretty clever."

"And a little reckless," Darren added, his tone softening. He looked at Maya, then at Alex. "But maybe we can use this. If we present the evidence, the client will have to negotiate. It could be the edge we need."

Maya felt the weight of the moment settle around her. The rooftop garden, once a quiet escape, now buzzed with the promise of a real change. She glanced at the city lights beginning to flicker on below, the silhouettes of office windows lining the streets. Her phone buzzed again, a new message flashing on the screen: "Final clue: Look beneath the bench. – ?"

She read the words aloud, her voice barely louder than a whisper. "Look beneath the bench."

Priya's eyebrows rose. "I didn't leave anything there. Maybe Sam did?"

Alex crouched down and lifted the edge of the bench. A small, folded piece of paper lay tucked in the wood grain. He unfolded it, and a doodle of a heart with the words "Meet me for coffee? – Alex" stared back at them.

Maya's cheeks flushed a deep pink. She glanced at Alex, who met her eyes with a faint smile that made her stomach flip. "Looks like you already have a plan," she said, trying to keep her tone light.

Priya laughed, the sound echoing against the metal lanterns. "I guess I gave you a chance to start something beyond the office. Good luck, both of you. And Darren, try not to turn this into a mandatory team‑building exercise."

Darren chuckled, shaking his head. "No promises."

As the group began to descend the stairs back to the office, Maya slipped the heart note into her pocket. The wind tugged at her coat, as if urging her forward. She felt a mix of excitement and uncertainty. The mystery was ending, but a new story was just beginning.

The elevator doors opened on the twentieth floor, and Maya stepped inside with Alex and Darren. The doors closed, and the numbers ticked down toward the ground floor. Maya stared at the heart note, then at Alex's profile reflected in the mirrored wall. She wondered if the next chapter of her life would be written in text messages, coffee dates, or perhaps something even more unexpected.

The elevator stopped at the lobby, and the trio walked out into the hallway where Jenna waited, leaning against a copier with a grin. "Did I miss the party?" Jenna asked, eyes twinkling.

Maya held up the note. "You might have, but we got an invite."

Alex squeezed Maya's hand once more before letting go. "Ready for coffee?" he asked.

Maya smiled, feeling the weight of the secret note dissolve into a simple, hopeful promise. "Yes," she said, stepping forward toward the coffee machine, "but first, I have a question for you."

The hallway lights hummed above them as they headed toward the break room, the mystery of the rooftop now a memory, and the future a blank page waiting to be filled.

As they turned the corner, Maya's phone buzzed again. The screen lit up with a new message: "Don't forget the deadline tomorrow. – ?" She stared at the words, a faint smile playing on her lips. The story was far from over.

The group paused at the doorway, each wondering what the next text would bring.
