Wrong Number, Right Guy · Chapter 8

Alex Takes the Stage

Maya felt a rush of heat in her cheeks as the senior team stared at her, waiting for the next word. The projector was dark, the room quiet except for the low hum of the air conditioner. Jenna gave her a quick nod, as if to say, "I trust you." Maya lifted her eyes to Alex. He stood tall, his coffee cup still half full, his hand still on the remote. She could see the determination in his jaw, the way his eyes narrowed when he thought about the emails on the tablet.

"I'll go first," Maya said, her voice steady. She stepped back from the table, letting the folder rest on the polished surface. The papers inside rustled softly as the breeze from the ceiling fan brushed over them. "Alex, you know the details better than anyone," she added, a faint smile playing on her lips. "You should lead this."

Alex glanced at the folder, then at Maya, and gave a small, appreciative smile. He lifted the remote and pressed the power button on the projector. The screen flickered to life, showing the first email from Priya's file. The subject line was bold and clear: "Budget Override – Urgent." The words on the screen seemed to pulse with importance.

"Good morning, everyone," Alex began, his voice calm but firm. "I know this is an unexpected turn, but the evidence we have is real, and it changes everything we thought we knew about this contract."

Mr. Collins raised an eyebrow, his silver‑gray tie catching the light. "Mr. Rivera, you have the floor. But remember, we are still under a tight deadline. The client will be here any minute."

Alex nodded, his fingers lightly tapping the remote. "I understand the pressure. That's why I want to be clear about what we have. The emails show a clear pattern of sabotage. Priya Mehta, a junior associate on the client side, sent these documents to Maya, who then shared them with us. The messages from the unknown number—" they were not random jokes. They were warnings. They told us someone inside the client’s legal team was trying to push a contract that would limit our agency’s leverage."

He paused, letting the words sink in. Jenna leaned forward, her eyes bright. "So the text messages were a lifeline," she whispered to Maya, who gave a small, grateful nod.

Alex continued, "We also have a timeline. The client’s legal team sent a revised contract on Tuesday. The next day, Priya sent the first email to Maya. On Thursday, Maya received the warning text. And today, right before this meeting, we got another text warning us that "they're listening."

A murmur ran through the room. Mr. Collins folded his hands, his expression thoughtful. "If this is true, we need to act fast. But we also need to protect our reputation. I suggest we put the campaign on hold until we can verify these claims."

Alex looked at Maya, then at the senior team. "Putting the campaign on hold is the right thing to do," he said. "But we need to do more than just pause. We need an investigation. We need to know who is feeding us these messages and why. And we need to protect Maya and Priya from any retaliation."

Darren shifted in his seat, his eyes darting between Alex and Maya. "Alex, are you saying we should bring in IT, maybe even the police?"

Alex shook his head. "Not the police yet. First, we should have an internal audit. Our own IT department can trace the source of the texts. If they come from inside the agency, we need to handle it discreetly. If they come from outside, we may need to involve the client’s legal team. Either way, we need to act now."

The senior team exchanged glances. The tension in the room was thick, but there was also a sense of relief. The unknown texter had finally given them a reason to pause and think.

Maya watched Alex, feeling a flutter in her chest. He was calm, confident, and clearly in control. She felt a surge of admiration. She also felt a pang of worry: if the unknown texter was someone from the office, could Alex be in danger? She glanced at her phone, the screen still lit with the warning: "They’re listening. Don’t trust anyone. – ?"

Alex seemed to sense her unease. He placed his hand gently on the folder, then lifted it and placed it in front of Mr. Collins. "This is the evidence," he said. "We need to decide what to do with it."

Mr. Collins sighed. "Very well. We'll suspend the campaign until the audit is complete. Alex, I want you to lead the investigation. Maya, you can assist where needed, but I don't want you in the direct line of fire."

Alex looked at Maya, his eyes softening. "I'll keep you safe," he said quietly. "You can still help, but I'll make sure you aren't exposed."

Maya smiled, feeling both comforted and a little left out. She nodded. "Okay. I'll do what I can."

The meeting ended with a sense of cautious optimism. As the senior team filed out, Priya stayed behind, still holding her tablet. "If you need anything else, Alex," she said, her tone professional but warm.

Alex turned to her. "Thanks, Priya. We'll be in touch."

Jenna lingered for a moment, then whispered to Maya, "You made a good call. Let Alex handle this. He looks like he knows what he's doing."

Maya laughed softly. "He does. And maybe... maybe he'll finally stop making fun of my jokes in the texts," she teased, nudging Alex's shoulder as he walked past her.

Alex chuckled, a sound that made Maya's heart skip. "Only if you promise to keep sending them," he replied, winking.

The two shared a brief, playful moment before Alex headed toward the hallway, his phone buzzing with another message: "They’re moving. Stay ready. – ?"

Maya stared at the screen, feeling the weight of the folder in her hands and the growing bond with Alex. The unknown number was still a mystery, and the stakes were higher than ever. But for now, she felt a strange calm. She had stepped back, let Alex lead, and maybe that was the right move.

As the conference room emptied, Maya heard a faint click from the projector. The screen flickered, showing a single line of text that hadn't been there before: "Meet me in the break room at 3:00 PM. – ?"

She looked up at Alex, who paused at the doorway, his expression shifting from confidence to curiosity. "Looks like we have another clue," he said, his voice low.

Maya swallowed, feeling the familiar mix of excitement and nerves. "What do we do?" she asked.

Alex glanced at his watch, then back at the screen. "We follow it," he said. "But we stay together."

Maya nodded, tucking the mysterious message into her pocket. She felt the hum of the office around her, the soft chatter of coworkers, and the steady beat of her own heart. The next step was uncertain, but she knew she wasn't alone.

The hallway lights flickered as Alex and Maya walked side by side toward the break room, ready to face whatever waited there.
