Wrong Number, Right Guy · Chapter 4
The Feathered Secret
Maya slipped the envelope back into her bag and walked quickly toward the elevator. The hallway was empty, the lights humming softly. She pressed the button for the second floor and waited, feeling the weight of the unopened note against her thigh. When the doors opened, she stepped into the open‑plan office and headed straight for her desk. The room was quieter now; most of her coworkers had already left, the coffee machine sputtered a final hiss, and a lone janitor rolled a cart down the aisle.
She set her bag down, pulled the envelope out, and turned it over. The feather sticker was small and white, almost like a bird’s quill. Maya lifted the flap, feeling a tiny rush of excitement mixed with nerves. Inside was a single sheet of plain paper, folded twice. The handwriting was neat, black ink on cream stock.
"Maya,
I know you think you have the whole picture with Alex, but there are things you don't see yet. He's not just a rival on the presentation floor; he's been hired by the parent company of our biggest client to act as a liaison. In other words, he's feeding us inside information. He also has a personal stake: his sister works in the legal department of that client and is pushing a new contract that could change the direction of the campaign. If you want to protect your team, keep your distance.
- An ally"
Maya read the note twice, then a third time. The words felt like a punch to the gut. Alex had seemed friendly, even charming, when they talked about the coffee shop and the project. The idea that he might be playing both sides made her stomach turn. She glanced at the white envelope, then at the blank screen of her computer. The PowerPoint she had finished was still open, the slides bright against the darkened office.
She thought about the anonymous text that had arrived just minutes before she left the building. The message was short: "Meet me at the coffee shop in ten minutes. I have something important to tell you about Alex." She had ignored it, choosing instead to stay inside and open the envelope. Now the note confirmed that someone was watching, someone knew more than she did.
Maya felt a cold draft from the air vent. She pulled her cardigan tighter around her shoulders. The office was silent except for the faint hum of the building's ventilation system. She wondered who the "ally" might be. A coworker? A rival? Someone from the client? The feather sticker gave no clue.
She picked up her phone, the screen still showing the unknown number's message. She could reply, ask who they were, or she could keep the note to herself and decide what to do later. She stared at the screen, at the blinking cursor, at the envelope now lying open on her desk.
A soft knock on her cubicle wall made her jump. It was Jenna, her best friend, holding a tote bag full of groceries. "Hey, Maya," Jenna said, smiling. "I thought you might be leaving early. I grabbed some snacks for the team. You okay? You look like you just saw a ghost."
Maya forced a laugh. "Just a long day," she said, sliding the note back into the envelope and tucking it into her drawer. "I got an extra project from Darren and... something weird happened with Alex."
Jenna raised an eyebrow. "Weird how?"
Maya hesitated. She could tell Jenna everything, but the note mentioned keeping the information secret. She also worried that sharing might spread rumors. Still, she trusted Jenna.
"Someone slipped me a note," Maya whispered, leaning close. "It says Alex is working for the client, feeding us info. And that his sister is involved in a big contract."
Jenna's eyes widened. "Whoa. That's huge. Are you sure it's legit?"
"I don't know," Maya admitted. "The handwriting looks real, but I have no idea who wrote it."
"Well," Jenna said, tapping her chin, "maybe we should find out who sent it before we jump to conclusions."
Maya nodded. The idea of a secret ally made her uneasy, but also curious. She glanced at her watch; it was almost six. The building's lights were dimming, and the evening sky outside the windows was a deep blue.
Just then, her phone buzzed again. The unknown number had replied: "I see you read the note. Meet me in the lobby in five minutes. I’ll explain everything."
Maya's heart raced. She could meet the sender now, or she could stay and finish the PowerPoint, or she could wait until tomorrow to discuss with Jenna. The note, the text, Alex’s invitation to coffee—everything tangled together like a knot.
She looked at the empty coffee mug on her desk, a reminder of the long hours she had already put in. The senior team presentation was tomorrow morning. If something went wrong, her reputation could suffer. But the secret about Alex could also affect the whole campaign.
Maya took a deep breath. She stood, grabbed her bag, and walked toward the lobby. The hallway was quiet, the carpet muffling her steps. As she reached the elevator, she saw a shadow move near the lobby entrance. A figure stepped out from behind a column, hands tucked into pockets.
"You came," the figure said, voice low. "I’m glad. You have to understand, this isn’t about ruining Alex. It’s about protecting the team."
Maya felt a cold sweat on her back. She recognized the silhouette—tall, with a cap pulled low. It could be anyone.
"Who are you?" she asked, voice steadier than she felt.
The figure stepped into the light. It was Darren, her boss, holding a folder in his hand.
"Darren? What are you doing here?" Maya asked, surprised.
"I got your note," Darren said, handing her the folder. "I’ve been watching Alex for weeks. He’s not just a rival; he’s a plant from the client’s side. I’m trying to figure out how deep he’s gone. The note you found was left for you by one of our senior analysts. We need to handle this carefully."
Maya stared at Darren, the folder heavy in her hands. The office politics she had tried to avoid had just become a real battle.
"What do we do now?" she asked, feeling the weight of the decision pressing on her shoulders.
Darren glanced at his watch. "First, we need to secure the presentation. Then we’ll set a meeting with Alex. He’ll have to explain himself. In the meantime, keep this between us. No one else can know until we have a plan."
Maya nodded, her mind racing. She thought of the coffee shop invitation, the anonymous messages, the feathered note, Jenna’s concern, and the looming senior meeting. She had a choice to make, and each path could change everything.
She tucked the folder into her bag, slipped the envelope back into her drawer, and walked back toward her desk. The PowerPoint file still glowed on her screen, waiting for the final polish. The office lights flickered as the building prepared for night mode.
Maya took a seat, opened the presentation, and began to add the last few touches. As she worked, she wondered how she would tell Alex what she now knew, and whether she could trust Darren’s plan.
A soft chime sounded from her phone. A new message from the unknown number appeared: "You’re right to be careful. I’ll be in the lobby in ten minutes. Bring the note."
Maya stared at the screen, the envelope hidden under a stack of papers. The night outside grew darker, and the city lights reflected off the glass windows. She felt the pull of many directions, each promising a different outcome.
She took a deep breath and made a choice.
