Wrong Number, Right Guy · Chapter 3

Choosing the Path of Focus

Maya sat at her desk, the half‑full coffee mug steaming beside her keyboard. The soft hum of the office wrapped around her like a blanket, but her thoughts were far from the numbers on the screen. Alex had just offered a place on his team, a tempting shortcut to a bigger project. Maya had thought about it for a few minutes, replaying the offer in her mind, feeling the pull of curiosity. Then she remembered the promise she made to herself that morning: to stay grounded, to finish the executive summary before anything else. She also remembered Jenna's warning about office politics and the risk of getting tangled in a rivalry she didn't need.

She opened a new email, typed Alex's corporate address, and began.

"Hi Alex," she wrote, keeping the tone professional. "Thank you for the meeting earlier. I appreciate the invitation to join your campaign work, but I need to finish my current responsibilities before I can take on anything new. I will be happy to share the market data you asked for, and I will let you know when I have capacity for a deeper collaboration."

She hit send, then leaned back, feeling the weight lift a little. The decision was simple on paper, but her heart still fluttered a bit when she thought of his smile in the meeting room. She glanced at the green bubble on her phone, a reminder that Alex was still texting her jokes and memes. For a moment she was tempted to reply, but she let the phone stay silent. The project she had been working on all week needed her full attention.

Maya turned to the executive summary. The deadline was 4 p.m., and she had only an hour left before Darren would need the final version. She typed a concise overview, pulling the key points from the slides she had presented earlier. The language was clear, the numbers were spot on. As she wrote, the office began to fill with the usual end‑of‑day buzz: printers humming, colleagues laughing in the break room, the occasional ring of a phone.

Just as she added the final recommendation, the office door opened and Darren stepped in, his expression a mix of urgency and encouragement.

"Maya, great work on the summary," he said, peering over her shoulder. "I need you to pull a quick PowerPoint for the senior team meeting tomorrow. It should highlight the data you just refined and add a few visual charts. Can you have that ready by the end of the day?"

Maya swallowed. The request added another layer to her already packed schedule, but she knew she could manage. She nodded.

"Sure, I can do that. I'll start the slides after I finish the summary."

Darren smiled, satisfied, and walked back to his own desk. Maya felt the pressure rise, but she also felt a spark of determination. She finished the executive summary, saved it, and clicked the attachment button to add the market research file Alex had asked for. The email went out, and she heard a soft ping as it was delivered.

She glanced at the clock: 3:45 p.m. The senior team meeting was tomorrow morning, and she still needed to create the PowerPoint. She opened a new slide deck, pulled a template, and began laying out the data. The charts she had built for the presentation earlier were ready to be copied over. As she worked, a soft buzz vibrated against her palm.

She looked down. It was a text message from an unknown number.

"Hey, Maya. I saw you helped Alex earlier. If you need any extra info on the upcoming product line, I can help. Let me know."

The message was brief, the sender unknown. Maya's heart skipped a beat. Who could it be? She glanced at the number – it was a local carrier, but the digits didn't belong to any contact she recognized. She could ignore it, but curiosity pulled her in.

She set the phone aside, focusing on the slides. The next hour flew by as she built charts, added bullet points, and refined the language. By 5:00 p.m., the PowerPoint was complete, saved in the shared drive, and a quick email to Darren confirmed it was ready.

Maya stretched, feeling the tightness in her shoulders loosen. The day was winding down, and the office began to empty. Some coworkers headed for the elevator, others lingered at their desks, typing away or gathering their belongings.

She packed her bag, slipped the business card Alex had given her into the bottom of her drawer, and walked toward the exit. The coffee shop across the street was still open, a small place she liked for its quiet corners and strong espresso. She imagined the warm drink in her hands, the soft music, and a moment of peace before heading home.

As she passed the reception area, the front desk clerk called out, "Maya, a package for you."

Maya turned, a little surprised. No one had mentioned a delivery.

The clerk handed her a small white envelope, sealed with a simple sticker bearing a stylized feather. Maya took it, thanked the clerk, and slipped the envelope into her bag.

She reached the lobby, swiped her badge, and stepped onto the elevator. The doors closed, and the soft ding of the floor indicator sounded as the car descended.

When the doors opened on the fourth floor, Maya walked out into the hallway. The sun had started to set, casting a golden glow through the windows. She turned the corner toward the exit, when a figure emerged from the side hallway.

It was Alex, holding a coffee cup, his eyes widening when he saw her.

"Hey, Maya," he said, a hint of surprise in his tone. "Did you get the data?"

Maya forced a polite smile. "Yes, I sent it a few minutes ago. I also finished the slides for the senior team."

Alex nodded, then glanced at the envelope in her bag.

"That looks interesting," he said, a little too casually. "Who sent it?"

Maya hesitated, feeling the weight of the unknown note inside the envelope. She could open it now, or wait until she was alone. The hallway was empty, the building quiet.

She took a deep breath. "I haven't opened it yet," she said, holding the envelope a fraction closer to her chest.

Alex smiled, but there was a faint edge to it. "Well, if you need any help with the campaign later, let me know. I think we could do great things together."

He turned to leave, then paused. "Oh, and Maya—if you ever want to grab coffee after work, there's a place nearby that serves a mean latte. Maybe we can chat about the project in a less formal setting."

Maya watched his back as he walked away, his steps echoing down the corridor. The invitation lingered in the air, a mix of professional courtesy and something softer. She lifted the envelope, feeling the paper's smoothness under her fingers, and wondered who had sent it and why it was addressed to her.

She stepped out of the building into the cool evening, the city lights flickering on. The coffee shop across the street called to her, its sign glowing warm against the darkening sky. Maya took a moment, hand on the envelope, heart beating a little faster. The decision she had made earlier—to keep her focus on the current project—still felt right, but the mystery of the note and Alex's lingering offer made her pause.

She turned the corner, the envelope still unopened, as a sudden ringtone cut through the street noise.

It was her phone, vibrating with a new message.

She looked at the screen: the unknown number had texted again.

"Meet me at the coffee shop in ten minutes. I have something important to tell you about Alex."

Maya's fingers hovered over the screen. The evening had already gotten busy enough. She could ignore the message, continue to the shop, or turn back to the office. The envelope inside her bag seemed heavier now, as if it held a secret that could change everything.

She took a deep breath, feeling the pull of two different paths—one that kept her focused on work, and one that promised answers she hadn't imagined.

The streetlights reflected off the wet pavement, and Maya stood still for a heartbeat, the city humming around her, waiting for her next move.
