Wrong Number, Right Guy · Chapter 15

Holding the Line

Maya took a slow breath and let the warning fade into the background. The client was still on screen, his eyebrows raised but his eyes still friendly. She glanced at Alex, who gave her a quick nod. "Okay, let’s keep going," she said, her voice steady.

The next slide glowed bright on the shared screen. A clean chart showed projected ROI for the next quarter. Maya clicked the remote and began to speak.

"As you can see, the numbers are solid," she said, pointing to the blue line that rose steadily. "We expect a 12 percent increase in revenue if we follow the plan we outlined last week."

She felt the familiar rush of adrenaline that came with a good pitch. The client smiled, and Jenna, half hidden behind her laptop, gave Maya a thumbs‑up while taking a bite of her donut.

Alex leaned slightly toward his own camera, his voice low enough that only Maya could hear. "I’ll pull up the comparison data on the side, just in case they ask for details."

A few seconds later a tiny window appeared in the corner of Maya’s screen. It showed a table of past campaign results, the kind of numbers that made the client’s eyes widen.

"Great, Alex," Maya replied, keeping her tone light. "That’s exactly what we need."

The client leaned forward, his hands resting on the table. "I like the numbers, Maya. But I’m also curious about the timeline. When can we see the first results?"

Maya smiled, feeling the conversation shift into a comfortable rhythm. "We can start the rollout next Monday. The first metrics will be ready by the end of the month, and we’ll give you a full report in six weeks."

"That works for us," the client said. "We’re ready to move forward."

Maya felt a small wave of relief. The presentation was back on track, the warning text now a faint buzz in the back of her mind. She kept her eyes on the screen, but her phone vibrated again, louder this time.

The message read, "You’re about to lose everything."

She glanced at the screen for a split second, then turned her gaze back to the client. "I’m sorry, we had a minor technical glitch," she said, smiling. "Let’s finish up."

She clicked to the final slide, a simple thank‑you graphic with the company logo. "Thank you for your time today," she said. "We’re excited to work together and make this project a success."

The client nodded. "We’ll be in touch with the contract. Thank you, Maya."

The video call ended with a polite wave from each participant. Maya exhaled, feeling the tension drain from her shoulders. Jenna clapped her hands lightly. "You nailed it!" she said, crumbs of donut falling onto the table.

Alex smiled, his eyes warm behind the camera. "You were great. I’m glad we could pull it off together."

Darren, who had been silent most of the meeting, finally spoke. "Good work, Maya. I’ll review the final numbers and get the paperwork ready."

Priya, who had been watching from the side of the room, gave Maya a small smile. "Looks like you handled that well," she said.

Maya thanked everyone and turned off her laptop. She reached for her phone, still buzzing with the mysterious messages. The screen showed a new line, sent just seconds after the last one.

"Meet me where the coffee is strong," it read.

She stared at the words, feeling a mix of curiosity and caution. The coffee shop across the street was the place where she and Alex often grabbed a quick espresso after work. Was the sender trying to set a trap, or was it a genuine invitation?

She slipped the phone back into her pocket, feeling the weight of the note she had found earlier still in her bag. The office was quiet now, the hum of the air‑conditioner the only sound.

Alex’s own camera was still on, his face appearing in a tiny window on Maya’s laptop as she closed the program. He raised an eyebrow. "Did you get another one?"

Maya nodded. "It says… ‘Meet me where the coffee is strong.’"

Alex chuckled softly. "That’s the place we both know. Maybe it’s a prank from one of the interns. Or maybe someone wants to talk in person."

Maya laughed, the sound light. "Or maybe it’s a sign that I should finally meet the person behind these texts."

"Or you could just ignore it," Alex said, his tone teasing. "You’ve already handled a lot today."

Maya thought about the pressure of the presentation, the strange warnings, and the growing connection she felt with Alex. She felt a tug toward the coffee shop, but also a pull to stay safe and keep the mystery at bay.

She stood up, stretching her arms. "I need to decide what to do next," she said, looking at the empty conference room.

The hallway outside was quiet, the late morning sun casting soft shadows on the carpet. Maya could go back to her desk, check the phone’s logs with Alex’s help, or step out into the street and see what waited at the coffee shop.

She felt the weight of the unknown number’s words linger in her mind. The warning, the second message, now this invitation. It was like a game, but the stakes felt real.

Maya turned to Alex, her eyes meeting his on the screen. "What do you think? Should I go?"

Alex’s smile was gentle. "Whatever you choose, I’ll support you."

She took a deep breath, feeling the buzz of the office fade as she imagined the aroma of fresh coffee. The decision hung in the air, ready to shape the rest of her day.

The phone vibrated again, this time with a simple ping. The screen showed a new notification: "Are you coming?"

Maya stared at the message, her hand hovering over the reply box. The future of the project, her job, and perhaps something more with Alex seemed to hinge on the choice she would make.

She closed her laptop, grabbed her bag, and walked toward the door, the hallway lights flickering on as she stepped into the bright morning.

The coffee shop’s sign glowed across the street, promising a warm drink and, perhaps, an answer.
