The Heir Who Said No · Chapter 11

Through the Rubble

Sergeant Kim slipped the black box onto the officer's seat. The metal clinked against the seat belt. The officer nodded, his eyes still on the box. "Take it to your superiors," he said. "We'll be waiting for you back at the gate."

Kim turned the key in the cruiser. The engine growled low. Dust rose from the twisted metal of the delivery truck. The black SUV sat at the edge of the wreck, its driver still watching. He could see the red light on the man's wrist flicker. The man raised his hand and pressed a button. A soft whirr came from the SUV.

Min reached for the flash drive in his pocket. His fingers were white. "It's still here," he whispered. He tucked the drive deeper, as if it might disappear.

Dong‑won gripped the steering wheel hard. The bruise on his cheek throbbed. He glanced at the road. The lane was blocked by the mangled truck and a jagged piece of metal that stuck out like a sword. The boardroom of Lee headquarters loomed ahead, a glass tower that reflected the gray sky.

"We have to go," Kim said. "If we stop, the contract will be signed."

The cruiser lurched forward. The front tires hit the broken bumper of the delivery truck. Sparks flew. The car shuddered, then rose over the dented metal. The windshield scraped against a twisted steel beam. Min felt the air whoosh past his face. He could hear the sound of glass cracking.

The cruiser burst through the wreckage. The black SUV roared after them, its engine screaming. The driver leaned out of the window, his face hidden behind a dark visor. He raised his hand and a small device on his wrist flashed again. A bright red line traced across the road, like a laser, aiming at the cruiser.

Kim swerved left to avoid the line. The car fishtailed. Dong‑won's head hit the roof. He winced. "Hang on!" Kim shouted.

Min clutched the flash drive tighter. He could feel the tiny rectangle pressing against his palm. He thought of his sister Soo‑jin, waiting at the office, and his grandmother Sun‑hee, who had begged him not to return. He thought of the people who would suffer if the money left the country.

The cruiser sped onto the main road that led straight to the headquarters. A security checkpoint stood at the entrance, a steel gate with a blinking red light. Two guards in dark uniforms held rifles. They stared at the approaching car, their faces hard.

Kim slammed the brakes. The cruiser skidded to a stop just before the gate. The red light flickered. The guards raised their rifles, aiming at the car.

"Pull over!" one of them shouted. "Hands where we can see them!"

Kim raised his hands slowly. He could see the flash drive glinting in Min's pocket. He could also see the black SUV pulling up behind them, its engine still growling.

The driver in the SUV raised his hand, then lowered it. A small hatch opened on the side of the SUV and a man in a black suit stepped out. He wore a thin black mask that covered his face. He carried a briefcase that seemed heavy.

The man walked toward the gate. The guards tightened their grip on their rifles. The officer who had taken the black box was still on the other side of the road, shouting into his radio.

Kim's mind raced. He could try to talk his way through, but the guards would not listen. He could try to run, but the SUV was right behind them. He could try to throw the flash drive out the window, hoping the guards would pick it up and realize the danger.

Min felt the weight of the drive. He knew the board meeting would start in fifteen minutes. He knew the evidence could stop it. He knew that if he lost the drive, the money would leave Korea forever.

Dong‑won opened his mouth. "We need to get inside," he said, his voice hoarse. "If we don't, they will sign the deal."

The masked man stopped a few meters from the gate. He looked at the cruiser, then at the black box still on the passenger seat. He raised the briefcase, opened it, and pulled out a sleek black tablet. He tapped a button. A soft beep sounded.

A loud horn blared from the headquarters building. The red light at the gate turned from blinking to solid red. The guards stepped back, their rifles still raised.

Kim felt the cruiser shake as a low rumble rose from the ground. The black SUV revved its engine. The masked man stepped back, his eyes hidden behind the mask. He pressed his thumb to the tablet. The tablet screen lit up with a map of the building.

"You have ten seconds," the man said, his voice muffled by the mask. "Give us the drive, and we will let you pass."

Kim stared at the man, at the guards, at the flashing red light. He could feel his heart pound. He could hear Min's breath, quick and shallow. He could see the boardroom windows, the people inside waiting for the contract to be signed.

He had to decide fast.
