The Billionaire’s Second Portfolio · Chapter 6

Morning Choices

The cheap flip phone buzzed again as Ethan slipped it back into his pocket. The screen showed "Unknown" and a blinking question mark. He stared at it for a moment, feeling the weight of the decision that sat on his shoulder. He could answer now, but the staffing job was at eight a.m. and the text from Mark Rivera said the uniform fee would be covered if he took the advance. The $15 would be deducted from his earnings later, leaving the cash in his wallet untouched.

Ethan glanced around the tiny kitchen. Mara was already pulling on her shoes, a faded pair of sneakers that had seen better days. "You ready?" she asked, tying a knot in the laces.

He nodded, but his mind kept drifting back to the folded flyer Lina had handed him. Victor Chen's coworking space would open on June 20, and the volunteers were needed on June 19 to set up chairs and tables. The flyer promised a free pass to the opening and a lunch voucher. Ethan knew Victor's name from a few overheard conversations at the local coffee shop. Meeting the owner could be a chance to plant a seed for a future venture.

He opened his wallet. Inside were a crumpled one‑dollar bill, a fresh twenty‑dollar bill, an old library card, a handful of receipts, two copies of his résumé, and the printed invitation from Victor. He also felt the smooth edge of the garden flyer promising a community garden cleanup on June 14. That was another way to meet people, but it would take time he did not have.

The building intercom crackled again, this time a muffled voice announcing "Elevator out of service." Ethan smiled; the old building was always a little broken. He pushed the door open and stepped onto the cracked hallway. The hallway smelled of stale coffee and cleaning fluid. A faint draft slipped through the cracked window at the end, carrying the sounds of the city waking up.

Outside, the streets were already busy. Delivery trucks groaned past, and a newspaper boy shouted the headlines about a local election. Ethan checked his watch. It was 6:45 a.m. He still had fifteen minutes before the bus would leave for the downtown warehouse. The bus stop was a block away, but the route to the warehouse was not direct. He could walk, but that would add an extra ten minutes.

He thought about the unknown call. The number could be a scam, a friend, or perhaps someone who had heard about his situation. Answering it could give him a lead, but it could also waste time and cause him to miss the bus.

Mara placed a hand on his shoulder. "Whatever you decide, make sure you get to the job. You need that cash for rent. And if you can swing a quick call, do it. Just don't be late."

Ethan took a deep breath. He could feel the old habit of weighing every choice, a habit that had cost him so much in his previous life. He looked down at his phone again. The screen still displayed "Missed call" and a red dot pulsing with each second.

He walked to the building's front door, the metal latch squeaking as he opened it. The early morning air hit him, cool and sharp. The street was alive with a mix of commuters, cyclists, and street vendors setting up stalls. He could see the bus stop sign a short distance away, a green rectangle with a picture of a bus and the words "Route 12 – Downtown".

He weighed his options. The staffing job was a sure way to get $150 cash, enough to cover the rest of his rent and leave a little extra for food. The volunteer work could give him a foot in the door with Victor Chen, but it was unpaid and would not solve his immediate money problem. The unknown call could be a chance to get help, or it could be a dead end.

He decided to act.

He stepped toward the bus stop, his sneakers thudding on the cracked sidewalk. The bus arrived on schedule, a yellow beast with a faded "12" on the side. He hopped on, finding a seat near the back. As the bus lurched forward, his phone buzzed again, this time with a text preview: "Hey Ethan, it's Alex from the garden crew. Need an extra hand tomorrow?" The sender was not saved, but the name rang a faint bell. Alex had been a volunteer at the community garden cleanup on the flyer he kept in his pocket.

Ethan stared at the message, his thumb hovering over the reply box. He could answer Alex and set up a plan for the garden, but that would be tomorrow, not today. He could also ignore it and focus on the job. He could also try to call back the unknown number now, while the bus was still moving.

The bus pulled up at a stop a few blocks from the warehouse. Ethan stood, clutching his bag, and stepped off. He looked up at the warehouse: a large brick building with loading docks and a big sign that read "Industrial Solutions". He could see the loading dock doors open, a forklift humming nearby.

He took a deep breath, feeling the early morning sun warm his face. The day ahead held a promise of cash, a chance to meet a new contact, and a lingering mystery from the unknown call.

He walked toward the loading dock, his heart beating a steady rhythm. The world around him seemed to hold its breath, waiting for his next move.

As he approached the dock, a voice called out, "Ethan?" It was Mark Rivera, standing beside a metal container, his hands in his pockets. "Got a minute?" Mark said, his smile widening.

Ethan hesitated for a split second, then nodded. "Sure. What's up?"

Mark glanced at his watch. "Just wanted to confirm you have the $15 for the uniform. I can give it to you now, or you can take the advance we talked about. Either way, you'll be set. Also, the client wants you to start a bit earlier, around 7:30, to help with a safety briefing. You good with that?"

Ethan felt a knot tighten in his stomach. The earlier start meant he would have to leave the bus stop sooner, cutting his time to answer the unknown call or the text from Alex. He looked down at his wallet again. He still had the twenty‑dollar bill and the one‑dollar bill.

Mark reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. "Here's the uniform fee slip. If you take the advance, just sign here and I'll give you the cash now."

Ethan stared at the paper, at the two paths opening before him. He could take the advance and keep his cash for rent, he could decline and try to find the $15 elsewhere, or he could ask Mark to wait a few minutes while he made a quick call.

The world seemed to pause for a heartbeat, and Ethan realized that each choice would shape the rest of his week.

He lifted his hand toward the pen.
