The Billionaire’s Second Portfolio · Chapter 1

Awakening

Ethan Hart opened his eyes to the sound of traffic and the smell of coffee drifting through thin curtains. The room looked exactly like the one he had left ten years ago, the cheap carpet, the cracked ceiling fan, the poster of a vintage Mustang on the wall. Sunlight poured in from a small window, catching dust motes that danced like tiny ghosts.

He sat up slowly, his head pounding as if he had just run a marathon. The bed felt harder than the soft mattress he remembered buying before his last company went bust. His fingers brushed the nightstand, and he found a worn leather wallet. He opened it. Inside were a few crumpled receipts, an old library card, and a single dollar bill. No credit cards, no cash, no checks. It was the exact amount he had when he first moved to the city.

Ethan swung his legs over the side of the bed and stared at the tiny TV in the corner. The screen showed a news ticker scrolling about the housing market. He realized the date on the digital clock was June 12, 2010. He had been born in 1985, so he was twenty‑five, not the fifty‑two he had been when he died. The world around him was the same, but his own life had been rewound.

He reached for his phone on the nightstand. It was a plain black flip phone with a small screen. The battery was dead. He tried to turn it on, but nothing happened. He fumbled for a charger in the drawer and found an old cord tangled with a few other cables. He plugged it into the wall, hoping for a flicker of life.

As the charger clicked, his mind raced. He remembered the day his last startup collapsed, the feeling of the bank sending him a final notice, the emptiness of his bank account. He remembered the market crash of 2020, the rise of streaming services, the success of a tiny app that later became a global platform. All those events were still ahead of him, waiting to happen.

He felt a cold surge of fear and excitement. He could not change the past, but he could use what he knew to avoid the mistakes. He would have to start with nothing, just like he had the first time. He would need a job, a small cash flow, a chance to invest in something that would grow. He thought of his sister Mara, who had always helped him with odd jobs. He thought of Victor Chen, who owned a coworking space that was just opening a few blocks away. He thought of the coffee shop on Main Street where people left their laptops and ideas.

Ethan stood and walked to the small kitchen. The sink was full of dishes from the night before. He turned on the faucet, letting the water run while he stared at his reflection in the chrome. He saw a tired face, eyes that had already seen failure, and a thin line of hope.

A sudden knock on the apartment door broke his thoughts. The sound was sharp, urgent, like someone who needed an answer fast. Ethan's heart thudded. He walked to the door, hand hovering over the knob, unsure who could be calling at this hour.

He opened the door a crack, and a thin envelope lay on the floor, addressed in neat block letters: "Ethan Hart – Urgent Opportunity Inside."
